← JapaReaderJapaReader terms of service
Draft for legal review. These terms are not yet in force and highlighted items are placeholders.
Last updated: [effective date]
These terms govern your use of JapaReader, our Japanese reading service on the web, Android and iOS. Please read them together with our privacy notice, which explains how we handle your data. By creating an account or using JapaReader you agree to these terms.
Who we are and who may use JapaReader
JapaReader is provided by Trivial Sense (“we”, “us”). Legal details: [full legal name, legal form, registered address, NIF/CIF and registry details].
You must be at least [minimum age, e.g. 14 under Spanish law or 16; the privacy notice must state the same age] years old to use JapaReader. If you are under the age of majority where you live, a parent or guardian must agree to these terms on your behalf. You may use JapaReader only for personal, non-commercial learning.
Your account
Give accurate information when you register and keep your password and devices secure. You are responsible for what happens under your account. Tell us at help@japareader.com as soon as possible if you think someone else has accessed it. If you read as a guest, signing out or removing the app ends access to your books and reviews; create an account to keep them.
Acceptable use
Do not:
- upload, generate or share content that is illegal, infringes someone else's rights, or is hateful, harassing, sexually exploitative or otherwise harmful;
- use JapaReader to distribute copyrighted books or other material to people who have no right to it;
- attack, overload, probe or bypass the security of the service, or access other users' data;
- scrape, copy or resell the service, the catalog or AI features, or use them to build a competing product or train AI models, except as the law expressly allows;
- use the AI features to try to produce harmful content or to circumvent the AI providers' safeguards.
Books you upload
You may upload EPUB files only if you own them or have the rights needed to use them in JapaReader, for example a DRM-free copy you bought for personal reading. Uploads stay private to your account; we do not add them to a public catalog or share them with other readers.
You keep all rights in your uploads. You give us a limited licence to store, process (including text analysis, furigana and, if you enable AI features, sending selected text to our AI providers) and display them to you, only to run the service for you. This licence ends when you delete the book or your account, subject to the retention limits in the privacy notice.
We may remove or disable access to content that we reasonably believe is unlawful or infringes someone's rights, and suspend accounts that repeatedly do so.
Copyright and content notices. If you believe content on JapaReader infringes your rights or is otherwise illegal, email help@japareader.com with your contact details, the content concerned (for example a link or book title), the rights you hold or why the content is illegal, and a statement that your notice is accurate and made in good faith. We will review notices promptly and tell you what we decided.
Catalog content
The catalog includes public-domain Japanese works from Aozora Bunko and translations from Project Sugita Genpaku and other free collections, distributed under the terms their sources publish. [confirm the licence and attribution requirements for each free collection] Our editions may add formatting, covers, level tags or furigana.
JapaReader Originals and other stories, illustrations, adaptations and covers made for JapaReader belong to Trivial Sense or its licensors. You may read them in JapaReader for personal learning but may not copy, redistribute or publish them elsewhere without our permission. Some catalog content is written or illustrated with AI and is labelled as such.
If you submit a story you generated for editorial publication, you give us a worldwide, royalty-free licence to edit, publish and display it to other readers in JapaReader. You can ask us to withdraw it at any time; copies already held by other readers may remain.
AI features
AI explanations, translations and story generation are optional and require your permission in Profile. They are produced by third-party AI providers named in the privacy notice.
AI output can be wrong, incomplete, unnatural or inappropriate, and the same request can give different results. Treat it as a study aid, check important points against reliable sources, and do not rely on it as professional, legal, medical or translation advice. Do not include personal or confidential information in AI requests.
Learning features
Spaced repetition, word lookups, furigana, level estimates and recommendations are automated tools that can contain mistakes. They are designed to support your study, but we do not guarantee any learning result, exam score or level of proficiency.
Price
JapaReader is currently free. There are no paid plans or in-app purchases. If we introduce paid features we will tell you in advance, and they will be governed by separate terms that you accept before paying. [replace this section if paid plans are launched]
Intellectual property
JapaReader, its software, design, name and logo, and our dictionary and analysis data, are owned by Trivial Sense or its licensors and protected by law. These terms give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the service as offered. Third-party dictionary and open-source components remain under their own licences.
If you send us feedback or suggestions, we may use them without any obligation to you.
Availability and changes to the service
JapaReader is in an early, limited release. Features may change, be added or removed, and the service may sometimes be unavailable for maintenance or for reasons beyond our control. We will try to give reasonable notice of significant changes that affect you, and we will not remove core features you rely on without good reason. Keep your own copies of books you upload.
Ending your use
You can stop using JapaReader at any time and delete your account on the web or from Profile in the app. Deletion is permanent and is described in the privacy notice.
We may suspend or close your account if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, if the law requires it, or to protect other users or the service. Unless the situation is urgent or the law prevents it, we will tell you why and give you a chance to respond. If we discontinue JapaReader, we will give you reasonable advance notice.
Our responsibility
We provide JapaReader with reasonable care and skill, but because it is a free, early-release service we provide it “as is” and do not promise that it will be uninterrupted, error-free or suitable for every purpose.
We are not liable for indirect losses or losses that were not reasonably foreseeable, for loss caused by your breach of these terms, or for events beyond our reasonable control. Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or wilful misconduct, for gross negligence, or any other liability that cannot be limited under applicable law, and nothing affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by Spanish law. If you are a consumer living in the European Union, you also keep the protection of the mandatory consumer laws of your country of residence, and you may bring proceedings in the courts of your country of residence or in Spain. We encourage you to contact us first at help@japareader.com so we can try to resolve any complaint informally.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example to reflect new features or legal requirements. For significant changes we will notify you in the app or by email at least 30 days before they take effect. If you do not agree, you can delete your account before then. The date at the top shows the latest version.
