JapaReader privacy notice
JapaReader is provided by Trivial Sense. This notice covers our web, Android and iOS reader.
Account and reading data
We store your email and a password hash to authenticate you. Uploaded books, covers, reading positions, settings, vocabulary, review results and reading interactions are processed on our servers to provide the reader, synchronization, recommendations and spaced repetition. Reading interactions used for these features are distinct from optional Firebase analytics.
Uploaded books are not added to a public catalog. AI stories you generate are private unless you explicitly submit them for editorial publication. Book cover URLs are currently retrievable by anyone who possesses the URL.
AI features
AI data sharing requires explicit permission in Profile. Sentence translation and explanation send the selected text and relevant reading context to the configured AI provider. Story generation sends your story instructions and level preferences. Providers supported by this service are Anthropic, OpenAI and Google; the active provider depends on the deployment. Do not include personal or confidential information in these requests.
AI outputs may be inaccurate. Provider-side retention and processing are governed by the provider's terms and the account configuration; deleting a JapaReader account does not itself erase third-party service logs.
Optional diagnostics
Firebase Analytics and, on mobile, Crashlytics are off by default. If you enable them in Profile, Google receives technical usage or crash data and installation identifiers. Our custom usage events contain fixed screen names and build/environment information, not book passages, search queries, email addresses or authentication tokens. Crash reports can include stack traces and diagnostic details.
No advertising identifier collection or advertising personalization is enabled. You can withdraw optional diagnostic consent in Profile. This stops future collection; it does not retroactively remove reports already sent to Google.
Deletion and retention
You can request permanent account deletion on the web or from Profile in the app. Access is revoked immediately. Cleanup starts after a one-hour processing-safety window and retries on storage failure. Account-linked data and unshared books are removed; copies already held by other readers remain.
Backups, operational logs and third-party records have separate retention schedules and must be considered when responding to a privacy request. A newsletter subscription is separate from a reader account; unsubscribe using the link in the email.
